In Case You Haven’t Seen It: The Secret of Kells

S.C. Barrus, S. Cody Barrus, Away and AwayToday we are starting our new recurring blurb which I’ve decided to call “In Case You Haven’t Seen It”.  In these posts I will highlight a lesser known movie, or perhaps just a movie which I think is fantastic, and try to convince you to watch it.  So, without further babble, lets begin this belligerent blurb!

In Case You Haven’t Seen It: The Secret of Kells

The Secret of Kells Animated Movie

The Secret of Kells is far and away my favorite animated movie.  Following Brendan, a young boy who lives in an Irish Abby under the ever present threat of the Norsemen who slaughter villages in search of gold.  It is also about the creation of the legendary Book of Kells, which, if you haven’t seen it, is breathtaking in its intricacy.  The film is simply yet beautifully animated with vibrant colors and haunting imagery.  Just watch the clip below to see what I mean.

The themes resonate through this movie, but the most prolific is the power of art, even in the most dangerous and trying of times.  Art gives the characters of the movie hope unlike the walls they build to protect against the Norsemen can.  Some won’t understand this theme, a characteristic which is also portrayed through the development of the Abbot, who tries to protect the people of the abbey with no regard to the work of art inspiring the people to go on.

Just in case you haven’t seen it (see, I know how a gimmick works), be sure you rent this movie.  It is available for instant streaming on NetFlicks.
